About this project:
The Dymax map project has gone through many iterations over the past 4-5 years. This latest one features what is likely the highest resolution single-image Dymaxion raster map in existence.
Previous iterations relied on basemaps gathered from publicly available files online, which were then hand-traced in Adobe Illustrator. This process resulted in numerous errors and inaccuracies that only revealed themselves when overlaying other maps.
Dymax v3's basemap was created using NASA's highest resolution Blue Marble imagery, which was then ported into ArcGIS Pro and converted to the Dymaxion (aka Fuller) projection and exported as puzzle-piece-like rasters. These pieces were then assembled in Affinity v3 to produce the final basemap.
This time, instead of simply eye-balling coastlines, I have landed on a workflow that minimizes inaccuracies and saves time:
-
First, a location map is gathered from Wikimedia Commons for the target area (in SVG format when possible).
-
Second, that map is opened in Affinity and relevant assets are transferred to the Dymax workspace.
-
Third, those assets are carefully positioned and transformed to match the basemap as closely as possible (often with the help of other maps overlaying the basemap).
-
Fourth, if needed, missing landmasses will be filled in manually; with the help of a parallel view of a site like OpenStreetMap or Google Earth.
After the base vector landmasses are complete, drawing of present-day political boundaries will follow.
These landmasses & boundaries will eventually serve as 'scaffolding' for a renewal of Project Patrujo, a world-building experiment imagining a decolonized, post-capitalist, solarpunk future.
